Description
‘AROUND the LOUP’ is the first publication of The Loup & District Historical Society. It records the history of the wider Ardtrea parish area from the earliest times to the mid 1900s, drawing on the oral history, historical documents and artefacts which local families kindly shared with us.
The book provides the reader with a unique insight into this place and its people, offering many gems of information such as letters from Famine times, Salters’ Company minutes, Hansard Report from the House of Commons, newspapers, family documents and letters.
The book documents the impact, on the local area, of national events such as the Plantation, Famine and the Civil War, along with European events such as ‘The Hungry 1930s’ and World War 2.
‘Around The Loup’ details the social history of emigration, local industry, farming, education, sport, church building and religious practice in the area known as The Loop. It also includes songs and poems by local writers.
